Hot Take: Matching Outfits Aren't the Goal
Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. One of the biggest questions I receive as a photographer is, "What should we wear?" The good news is there isn't one perfect answer! There are simply a few guidelines that will help your photos feel timeless, cohesive, and authentically you.
Whether you're planning your annual family photos, a maternity session, or simply documenting this season of life, these tips will help you feel confident and camera-ready. Overall, think: coordinating, NOT matching!
Here are some simple steps to help you figure things out! And make sure to check out my Pinterest style guide link at the bottom of this blog.
Step 1: Start with Mom
Remember what flight attendants say: "Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others!"
If you've ever tried coordinating outfits for an entire family, you know it's much easier to build around one look than start from scratch. Find an outfit that complements your style and personality best and build everyone else's look on top of yours.
I always recommend choosing Mom's outfit first since it's often the most detailed. Once you have that picked out, it's much easier to coordinate everyone else's clothing using complementary colors and textures.
And if a "mom" isn't applicable, then start with the person who is in charge of organizing this whole shebang! It's all about you, love <3
Step 2: Choose Complementing Colors
Instead of dressing everyone in identical outfits, aim for a color palette with three to five complementary colors. Earth tones and pastels work best!
Some of my favorite combinations include:
- Cream + Sage + Tan
- Dusty Blue + White + Khaki
- Rust + Olive + Cream
- Navy + Beige + Soft Gray
- Blush + Taupe + Ivory
These combinations photograph beautifully in every season and allow each person's personality to shine without competing for attention.
It's best to avoid neon colors, large graphic logos or brands, and everyone in the exact same color. Why? These choices distract from natural skin tones, create harsh color reflections, or make the images look dated and rigid.
It's best to stick with neutral tones! They create a timeless foundation while allowing your surroundings and your connection with one another to be the focus.
Such as:
- Cream
- Beige
- White
- Soft gray
- Olive
- Camel
- Navy
Step 3: Add a gentle texture
Texture adds depth and interest without overwhelming your images.
Some favorites include:
- Knit sweaters
- Linen dresses
- Flowy fabrics
- Denim
- Lace
- Corduroy
- Chunky cardigans
If one family member wears a subtle pattern, keep everyone else's outfits more solid to create balance.
Step 4: Dress for the season
The best outfits not only complement one another but also feel appropriate for the time of year.
Spring
Soft pastels, florals, linen, and light layers.
Summer
Lightweight fabrics, breathable dresses, short sleeves, and soft neutral colors.
Fall
Warm earth tones like rust, olive, mustard, cream, camel, and burgundy pair beautifully with all things autumn.
Winter
Layers, sweaters, boots, and rich neutral colors create cozy, timeless images.
Last Step: Keep Location in Mind
Your outfits should complement your surroundings and match the exact vibe you're looking for.
For garden/park sessions, soft colors and flowy fabrics create a romantic look.
For open fields, earth tones blend beautifully with nature.
Downtown sessions often pair well with more modern, structured outfits.
Beach sessions are perfect for light neutrals and airy fabrics.
Minor Details
Coordinate—Don't Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans.
Instead, aim for variety while keeping everyone within the same color palette.
Different textures, layers, and shades create a much more natural, elevated look.
Keep an Eye on Comfort
If you're constantly adjusting your outfit, it will show in your photos.
Choose clothing you can comfortably sit, walk, hug, and play in.
Kids especially photograph best when they feel comfortable and free to move.
Accessorize Thoughtfully
Simple accessories can complete an outfit without becoming distracting.
Consider:
- Delicate jewelry
- Neutral hats
- Hair bows
- Scarves
- Suspenders
- Layered necklaces
Less is often more.
What to Avoid
A few things I'd recommend skipping:
- Neon colors
- Large logos
- Character clothing
- Athletic sneakers (unless they're part of your style)
- Apple Watches or fitness trackers (classic analog watches are fine!)
- Clothing that's heavily wrinkled
- Matching everyone exactly
Final Thoughts
The best outfits are the ones that let your connection take center stage. Your family doesn't need to look perfect—you just need to look like yourselves.
When you choose clothing that feels comfortable, coordinates naturally, and reflects your style, your photos will feel timeless for years to come.
